Wellington Masakadza, born in Harare, is a skilled left-arm orthodox spinner and a key figure in Zimbabwe’s limited-overs cricket. He is the youngest of the Masakadza brothers, following in the footsteps of his elder siblings Hamilton and Shingirai Masakadza, both of whom have represented Zimbabwe at the international level across formats.
\r\n\r\nWellington earned his maiden ODI call-up in October 2015, during a transitional period in Zimbabwean cricket. He debuted in the first ODI against Ireland in Harare, where he immediately made an impression. With the ball, he took 2/45, and with Zimbabwe in a tricky chase at 171/7, he contributed with a calm and crucial partnership—adding 38 runs with Sikandar Raza—to guide the team to victory.
\r\n\r\nJust days later, Wellington made headlines during the ODI series against Afghanistan, delivering a stunning spell of 4/21, including a double-wicket maiden in only his sixth over—quickly establishing himself as a bowler capable of handling high-pressure situations.
\r\n\r\nAhead of the 2016 ICC World T20, Wellington was drafted into the squad as a late replacement for Graeme Cremer. Despite his limited experience at the time, he showed maturity beyond his years. In a key game against Scotland, he held his own under pressure, returning match-winning figures of 4/28 with clever changes of pace and flight.
\r\n\r\nWellington made his Test debut on November 3, 2018, against Bangladesh in Sylhet, where Zimbabwe secured a memorable 151-run win. He contributed with two wickets in the final innings, playing a role in Zimbabwe’s rare overseas Test victory.
\r\n\r\nIn September 2021, during a T20I series against Scotland, Wellington showcased his composure under pressure once again. Tasked with defending 12 runs in the final over, he delivered a match-winning performance by dismissing a well-set Michael Leask, helping Zimbabwe level the series.
\r\n\r\nOver the years, Wellington Masakadza has grown into a reliable and economical spinner, known for his tight lines and subtle variations. He has become a mainstay in Zimbabwe’s white-ball setup, often trusted to bowl in key phases of the game.
\r\n\r\nAs Zimbabwe looked to qualify for the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup, Wellington remained a vital part of their bowling arsenal—bringing experience, calmness, and control to the team’s spin department.
